What are the career opportunities
for music therapists in Canada/USA?
Career opportunities will vary in each province in Canada and depending
upon what kind of clients you will be working with. Like the Music Therapy
Assn. of BC, there are associations in most other provinces except Atlantic
Canada. You may want to speak to some local music therapists in your area
about the job climate where you are. You could also get in touch with
the Canadian Assn. about interviewing a music therapist in your area (www.musictherapy.ca).
The pay scale will vary according to each province.
In the U.S. there are numerous jobs depending again on the State you would live in. You will also find a wider range of possible jobs because they simply have so many more people living there that specialty treatments centers exist. ...top
How do music therapists start their
career?
Music therapists begin their career through different means. Someone in
BC might rely on the Association since we are usually the first place
approached when there's a job opening and we post them to members. You
also have to be good at promoting yourself - sending out resumes and establishing
contacts to either get work at a facility or to begin a private practice
that consists of individual clients coming to a studio. The majority of
music therapists work at multiple places....top
Do most positions need a masters
degree?
Teaching positions are typically the only positions which require a masters
degree, however many employers will look favourably on a candidate with
a masters degree. Wilfrid Laurier University is the only program in Canada
right now with a masters degree. The U.S. has many options, depending
on your finances....top
Will the government cover the cost
for music therapy services?
The government typically does not cover the fee for a person wanting to
do MT. There are some exceptions, such as a WCB case. MT is not covered
by health care and extended health care plans do not cover it. That may
change in a few years here in BC because we're going to be part of a governmentally
regulated college of counselling professions. I think this will improve
our coverage by other plans....top
