Dr. Carolyn Kenny Celebration of life

Music therapy communities in BC, Canada, and across the world lost a beloved music therapy pioneer on October 15, 2017. Dr. Carolyn Bereznak Kenny passed away peacefully in Santa Barbara surrounded by her loving family. She had been in ill health for 15 months with a cancer diagnosis while living in Vancouver and had moved to a hospice in Santa Barbara in August to be near her daughter and granddaughters.  The celebration of life honouring Dr. Carolyn Kenny was held on March 27, 2018 at First Nations House of Learning Sty Wet Tan Hall at University of British Columbia.

The evening was filled with sharing story, poetry, music, memories and beauty. Carolyn’s daughter, Shannon, and Shannon’s two daughters were present. All of Carolyn’s communities were invited: music therapy, Indigenous, research, and academia, friends, former students, and anyone who has been touched and inspired by Carolyn’s writings and by who she was.

Carolyn had developed the first music therapy program at this hospice ten years ago, and with her daughter, Shannon, established a donation fund in her name to ensure that music therapy services are ongoing. At last count, mover $6,000 had been raised. Donations can be made to: http://www.vnhcsb.org/carolynkenny/

The Carolyn Kenny Memorial Music Therapy Bursary
ENDOWMENT FUND

In 2004, members of the music therapy community established the Carolyn Kenny Scholarship. The award was re-established in 2017 as a memorial to Carolyn Kenny, a founder of the CapU Music Therapy Program, following her passing. It supports students enrolled in a music therapy program at Capilano University who demonstrate financial need. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for an endowment so that this busary will carry on in perpetuity. Thank you for your contribution. To donate, please follow this link: https://www.capilanou.ca/giving/
