ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
This 90 minute workshop is about vocal play and increasing the joy factor! Laurel Murphy will be your guide and lead you through exercises designed to recharge, inspire and free your voice. Connect to your body and breath and listen for your own authentic sound. Add your voice to a heartfelt circle of spontaneous choral grooves, rhythms and harmonies. Then, stretch out and use your voice as an instrument of play and spontaneous self-expression. The entire workshop will be a capella. Join us for this uplifting experience!
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Laurel Murphy is a Vancouver singer and facilitator who has devoted over 30 years to the practice of vocal improvisation and complimentary disciplines. She is passionate about vocal improvisation as path to self-expression, awareness and development of music skills. Her formal music training includes many years of private study in vocal technique and completion of the jazz program at VCC in 1996. Laurel has also been greatly influenced over the years by her work with Rhiannon and Bobby McFerrin. This approach to improvisation inspired her to produce SongRise New Year’s events in 1995 and 1999 and to lead the ongoing SongRise Improv Choir, Singing on the Edge classes and many other projects and events. Her most recent performance series, “Blank Space” was a forum for improvised voice, narrative, movement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Improvisation has infused all aspects of Laurel’s work, from performances of jazz repertoire and live vocal looping to immersive soundscapes for healing. During the pandemic, Laurel adapted to online teaching and streaming of immersive sound journeys. As she returns to working in person, she is very interested in the possibilities of hybrid sessions that will allow participants to interact live and online at the same time. Laurel is currently working on a variety of projects and recordings. Her jazz cd “When I Was a Bird” was released in 2015.
See you there,
on behalf of the Board,
